What Does Minimum Wage Actually Mean In The Real World?

mardi 5 avril 2016

Ive just been listening to You and Yours about the new minimum wage.

What comes over is the employers are inherently tight and dont want to pay it

1) All the happens is hours are cut and staff forced to do more work...ie negates the feeling of more money per hour

2) Younger people under 24 and students will get the jobs as employers go down the age and cost scale. At 25+ people dont stand a chance.

3) Minimum wage has led to a zero hours contract situation which makes a mockery of minimum wage per hour. Its pointless bigging up MW if there is only 10 hours work

4) Employers demand supervisory skills, responsibility and years of experience for minimum wage.

5) Unions are effectively powerless and employers just say F off even if workers join a union

6) Wages are being subsidised by working tax credits etc

I know people in a self employed situation that dont even earn a minimum wage....parcel delivery...taxi driving for a firm etc.

I would argue that if a business cant pay a decent wage they are not a viable business. I just think most of them are greedy, trying it on and racing for lowest common denominator staff.

Oh edit..... Ageism is rife and all this does is enlarge the problem. I dont know of any case where somebody has been prosecuted for ageism but the MW age groups writes it into the unspoken code

Ok this might be at a certain skill level but surely everyone is entitled to a LIVING wage. This is Thatchers legacy and a compete undermining of the british working class

Is the minimum wage legislation just hot air and a pretence that the government care. Its a nonsense really isnt it?
