I've got tickets for next week and am getting so excited that I actually almost typed super excited. I was lucky enough to see the same team's Satyagraha (Improbable Theatre / Phelim McDermott) last year, which (rather theatrically) I think is one of the most overwhelming evenings I have ever spent in a theatre - and that's after admitting that Satyagraha is the weakest of the three Glass 'portrait' operas and being a bit of an opera groupie so used to being overwhelmed. An object lesson in what a trancendental production can do OK source material. Having said that, the 80's ENO Akhnaten was a stonker so this new production has a lot to live up to.
A fashion forward gender realignment in act two, and the lead has shaved his head to make the gold leaf easier to apply. What could be more promising?
