MacBook or Pro or Air or Dell XPS or Windows Surface or...
My 5 year old 11 inch Air is getting a bit slow and the screen isn't great. I'm considering a replacement. It doesn't seem to be a great time to buy a new Apple laptop though. The Air is a nice machine with a reasonable starting price, although the screen is underwhelming by 2016 standards. You can build to order (BTO) with an i7 processor and 512GB flash but only 8GB RAM for some reason. The MacBook is an impressive machine to look at with a Retina display, a nice keyboard and decent battery life but is seriously underpowered. The Pro is almost perfect but is a bit bulky and heavy and beginning to look a bit long in the tooth. A new model is expected in June, but who knows what the spec or price will be. And with lots of people waiting to get one, there could be supply problems.
I've been thinking about a Windows machine after 20 years of buying nothing but Macs. The Dell XPS 13 is very nice, but not perfect, and not cheap. Then there's the amazing Microsoft Surface Book. I never thought I'd say it, but I could be tempted to switch. Of course, after 20 years I'm firmly in the Apple ecosystem, with iPad, iPhone, iTunes etc so a move to Windows could cause all sorts of problems. But Windows 10 runs OS X very close these days and may even be better in some ways.
I'll probably hold off buying until the new MacBook Pro is announced (by which time other computer makers could have released better machines as well) but would be interested to know if anyone has switched from Mac to PC or vice versa and what are your experiences?
