Nakamichi DR2 problem - weird...

I've had a DR2 for about 12 years, and a few years ago, the output (both through headphones and RCAs) become weak and distorted, and input in record mode had very very low levels and the record level control didn't change the level whatsoever...

I took it to someone I know who fiddled around with the ribbon connectors to the output sockets, and miraculously, the problem solved itself, only to return about 12 months later. I then took the deck apart and mucked about with contact cleaner on the ribbon connectors, and the deck was then fine for a while, only for the issue to return again.

Anyway, I boxed the deck up about 2 years ago, and just for a laugh, I just unboxed it again and plugged it in and plugged headphones in to it. Well, playback is fine again! I now have it wired into my AV amp in my spare system and it's sounding fine...

Can an earthing issue cause the symptoms described, as I've had the occasional weird thing when using cassette decks on Naim equipment (which uses 5-pin DIN sockets) before. Obviously the AV amp has normal RCAs - could this be why it seems to be working OK now? The last time the deck broke, it wouldn't perform into normal RCAs or the DIN on the Naim gear, so I'm really puzzled.

I can't afford to send the machine to Bowers and Wilkens at the moment, so am wondering whether I'm likely to break it permanently by using it, or whether it's a poltergeist or something...

Any ideas?
