How do musicians make a living?

Just something that occurred to me. In the old days, musicians sold LPs and 45s. Often they would not make much in concerts because they promoted record sales.

Today they sell some CDs, but their music is available for download for very little money legally, or very easily for free illegally.

A few months back a friend told me he had gone to a John Mayall concert in France, and afterwards the man himself was selling CDs to the audience. Which in a way is quite sweet, but also a little disturbing.
