What to believe

How the hell is it possible to put together a decent hifi system when 'facts' and evidence is in such short supply?

It's a fact that some people spend thousands on speaker cables and are convinced they are better even though there is no scientific evidence to back this up. On the other hand there are many people with very expensive systems who use the cheapest speaker cable available claiming it makes no difference.

If you're looking to buy a DAC you'll read forum experts telling you that all DACs sound the same and a £100 will do the same job as a £10,000 one. Thse with expensive DACs say there's the world of difference.

Mains cables do or do not make a difference. Some people pay £50 for a fuse.

I could go on.

The truth is out there. Or not. Maybe.
