Heroes and Low: Just the way they are or bad mastering?

I recently bought David Bowie's Low and Heroes and while I'm really enjoying them -- and should have bought them ages ago! -- the sound is compressed and shrill.

I have the 1999 CD remasters.

I like these albums enough to seek out a better mastered version, but I'm curious if they all sound squished and zingy. Oddly, my copy of Zingy Stardust is anything but.
