Best small speakers for rock and/or roll?

Evening all,

I was just wondering if you guys have any suggestions for, or experience with, some cracking standmount speakers that would be good with mainly rock, indie, alternative etc? I'm currently in the market due to a recent house move to a small living room so ideally would like a small pair that'll be unfussy about placement and will be musically involving with a large soundstage on the end of a lenco PTP turntable / naim dvd5 and Copland CSA29? I know I'll need to audition but some pointers would be fab. In terms of price, I'm happy to save for the right ones, but perhaps 600-1500 second hand? Thanks guys
