25 years on: Average Russian better off since the fall of communism

Any views on the title for this thread.
Thought it might be an interesting point to discuss as by now, you'd have thought that the country would have sufficiently stabilised to get a real understanding of the benefits and costs.

A few thoughts:
+ Can now buy Western goods
+ Apparently higher level of "spending", which is a way to measure wealth
+ Mafia/corruption
+ Supposed increase in average living spaces

- Loss of provided healthcare, schooling, jobs etc. Implications being an increase in poverty level persons
- Possibly safer from the point of crackdowns on crime

In addition:
Corruption was hidden, but probably there. Was it as bad
