The other Gong trilogy...

Michael C's thread reminds me – everyone talks about the Pothead Trilogy and lots of love there, but for me there is another Gong trilogy:

1. Mystic Sister/Magick Brother
2. Bananamoon
3. Camembert Electrique

All different line-ups. but somehow these all hang together as a state of mind.

1. Daevid Allen and Gilli Smith. With an appearance by the Barre Phillips. Lovely songs (Smith), sound and production. Open and fresh. Charming. Poetic.

2. Daevid Allen solo with a makeshift band (Wyatt, Evans, Legget, Tritsch, Pyle) pulled this off in a very quick time. Incredible mix energy, ideas and imagination. Messy, undisciplined and fun. Nice sound.

3. The classic Gong line-up with Tritsch, Malherbe and Pyle. It all came together on this one. Still lots of real-world songs, before the Pothead fantasy took full reign, and before Daevid gave the musical direction to Steve Hillage.

And, of course, the Continental Circus LP which feels like a cleaned up version of 3, or a rehearsal for it.

A rawer Gong. Three great albums.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
