Naim power amp to none Naim pre. Weird problem.

Playing around with some kit last night I decided to try some other pre's with a couple of Naim power amps.

I'd done this before with good results by the way I thought.
Anyway I hooked up the first valve pre to the amp and when turned on it was at full volume even though volume control was set to 0. Twiddling the dial did nothing.
I reckoned the pre might have been at fault with lack of use so hooked another valve pre up to the amp, stuff me exactly the same Full volume and pre ineffective.

I then hooked amp up with a none powered passive pre and it worked and sounded super.

Thinking maybe the pre's were both at fault (although that would have been a big coincidence) I played them with other none Naim power amps and they behaved perfectly and functioned 100%.

I'm baffled, just wondered if the more enlightened guys than me on here could take a guess at what was causing this strange issue. As I say I could have sworn I'd done this before with no issues.
