So I've been thinking about a change for many many months now and seeing as I have a few weeks off work nows the time to do it. I've been few a number of Rega turntables and have settled on a tweaked RP6 (for now).
So what I have now is an RP6 with a Tecnoarm (not the RB303) and a Groovetracer reference subplatter. My cartridge is a Goldring 2500 and I just use the phonostage on my Brio-R amp.
I've come to the conclusion the Goldring 2500 has no bass and is too 'modern' sounding for my turntable. I know the RP6 has a reputation as a 'modern' sounding turntable combined with the silver wired Tecnoarm as well it just not doing it for me sound wise. There is not enough bass energy. It is there but nimble.
I recently bought an Audio Technica AT95E as a spare cartridge and just out of interest set it up and I was surprised at the bass energy coming out of my system. I was thinking about moving up the AT range but I didn't like the presentation of the AT95E cart which I thought was too forward and brash.
TBH I enjoyed the GL 2500 on my P3 24 (which is known to have bass bloom) and my P5 (the RB700 is known to have a bass hump) but those turntables were lacking in other departments, hence my RP6 which I have now. I enjoy it still but the bass is not enough.
So I have about £200-£250 so find a really nice MM that kicks it in the bass department and has a lovely mid range. I would love to try an Audio Note cartridge but I think they are more that I am prepared to spend. Grado are interesting me, possibly the wood range. Denon are also another option (DL110 and 103).
Any other suggestions?
Recommend me a nice MM with lots of bass :)
