Polished / Reflective Glass on Computer Screens & TVs. WHY?

As per title. Why?

My old gas powered work laptop is dying, so I just started using my new (to me) Lenovo i7 handed down from kids. All very good & fast, but the shiny screen! If I wanted to look at the Sun shining through the windows, I'd look at the fcking Windows. I want to see what's on screen & nothing else!

We've got a posh Sony telly at home with the same problem. Daytime viewing severely compromised. It's put me right off Jeremy Kyle

Why do some companies do this?

Is there anything I can do? Acid etch? Sandpaper?
