Nakamichi CA-5E Phono stage hum ?

So as the title suggests there is an audible hum from the pre-amp, but only when the phono stage is selected, even with nothing connected ? and at only a quater to a third volume ? it's controlling a JVC M-3030 power amp if that helps ?

As I'm new to vinyl, I thought I had better ask here first before contacting the seller (ebay) it's not normal is it ? I can't really hear it while music is playing, but it must be there muddying the sound, it's just kinda annoying
