More Tips for De-Gumming Royd Minstrels

Ive had a good day today sprucing them up. I noticed a slight bit of stickiness return in one driver so I went all out to sort it.

If you roll smallish pieces of paper round the central core in the gap. you can use a triangular shape which is easier to get in. Roll it carefully round so youve covered say 180 degrees or more.

Careful to avoid catching where the ring splits One sheet no need to fold it as you dont want too much pressure on that coil ring

Then you dab just enough white spirit on the paper with a cotton bud and carefully move it backwards and forwards until it cleans any remaining gum off the core and coil ring. Keep using fresh pieces of paper until you are satisfied they are not coming out with black marks

You can then move the paper slowly round and cover the whole core and ring

Use a quality sheet of paper to take pieces off. Dont dab too much white spirit so the paper gets to soggy and may tear. Good paper is quite resiliant to white spirit if you dont go overboard.

It really has cleaned the remaining black gum out. You can go quite deep but I dont know where any wires come in so you cant be too forceful. Nice and gentle and the paper is abrasive enough with the dampened cleaning power of white spirit

The jobs a good un and its lovely clean and free.

Of course this is the later stages when most gum has been picked off any exposed areas and picked away with paper.

Just thought I would share a bit more about restoring these lovely speakers
