I am trying to locate the ceiling joists and am having a bit of a nightmare.
I started off using a magnet and managed to locate four fixings that form part of the existing plasterboard ceiling, and from there I had an explore with a hammer and a nail to see if the joists continued in the same direction as the fixings suggested.
Well, they don't!
So confused was I that I decided to knock a few chunks of plasterboard off to try and get an idea of what's happening, and it appears that there are bits of wood going off in all directions.
I don't understand what's happening so would appreciate if anyone is able to offer any suggestions as to what it is that's going on.
I attach a picture, which shows two fairly substantial pieces of wood, flanked by smaller pieces, more or less running at right angles to each other.
You can see the screw on the left hand side, my assumption was that this piece of wood would continue in the same direction across the entire ceiling.
I have also continued to try and find more fixings with the magnet but am struggling with this too. It's all rather frustrating.
The property is a bungalow / chalet which was built in the 1945.
Any help appreciated. I really don't want to pull the entire ceiling down.
