Audibility thresholds

Following on from another thread, I was just thinking that it might be worth discussing audibility thresholds, particularly With regards to known digital to analogue conversion issues.

So, what are the real world problems here, and what is the evidence (preferably scientific, rather than anecdotal) that it might have an impact for an attentive listener with good hearing?
