I prefer to buy point taps as they can be used in a cordless drill rather than doing it by hand and snapping them. If you are going to do blind holes get spiral point taps, if you are doing thru holes get straight point taps. These say spiral point but they are clearly straight flute - http://ift.tt/1QgoL2B

Routers I think the Makita RT0700CX4 looks a good bet. Or the RT0700CX2 which is the same with more accessories like a plunge base and fence.

Small and easy to handle plus it has constant speed tech so it maintains speed even under load. This is very important as cheaper routers just adjust the power going to the motor to change speed and so under load the speed changes and cut quality changes too. From the Makita manual: "Possible to get fine finish, because the rotating speed is
kept constant even under load condition. "

However it is less powerful than the bigger routers (1 1/4hp about 900watts) so don't expect to put large bits in and mince away at significant hardwood.
