Basic Q on Mac. AIFF to MP3 burn

Hi folks

I am trying to make a cd for friends of my shite musical tastes. My files are all AIFF.

They are fine with MP3

When I put a recordable cd into my mac book pro. It does not recognise a blank cd r

Macs are odd but is there something obvious I'm missing - or something else?
