sme headshell

No correct answer IMHO as it all depends on context, i.e. cartridge mass, compliance etc etc. The SME headshell gets a bad rap from some quarters, usually those who don't really understand that "rigidity" is a myth when it comes to tonearms (everything resonates somewhere!). Bottom line is the ADC shell will sound different, but whether you prefer it depends on many other factors. Another area to play with is how the arm is attached to the armboard, e.g. the tightness of the screws in the rubber washers, or even if you want to use the rubber washers at all. As ever don't automatically assume tight is best. It usually isn't! Just listen to everything. As a matter of interest which 3009 model do you have and what cart are you planning to use?

FWIW The 3009 has really surprised me of late. It may not be the last word in the extremes but it is really nice and open in the mid and very coherent and together. The combination of DL-103 in the original SME headshell with a couple of headshell weights on my TD-124/II really does something that makes me want to keep spinning vinyl. It works on a fundamentally enjoyable and musical level somehow.
