Well this is quite interesting - i'd heard of this sort of ruling, and had assumed the purpose was really to allow the conviction in gang related crime, where, say, an attacker mingles with a crowd, and avoid prosecution as it's not clear who committed the attack. In this situation, the gang would all be found responsible for the attack.

It appears that this basic idea has grown over time to cover all sorts of different scenarios, and it looks like there are likely to be a number of convictions ruled unsafe.
