Which ATC to buy.... or something else?
First of all, great forum you have here, been reading it for years but finally decided to ask for help.
Also apologies for my english, it's not my native language.
I would like to upgrade my system which at the moment consists of the following: Mytek 192 DSD DAC , Roksan Caspian M2 integrated and B&W 705 speakers on their designated stands. The room is 4mX6m with a dining room opening of additional 4m X 3,5m.The only place where the speakers can be is on the short 4m wall firing across the room. The room is a bit lively but I am in the process of some basic acoustic treatments.
The main thing that I would like to change are the speakers, I can't stand them any more. They were my first "real" speakers bought several years ago, but it's time for them to go.
At the moment, the sound signature that I crave for is big dynamics, good timber and neutral (or natural) as possible. Most of my listening is classical music (operas and orchestral) and jazz (Coltrane,Miles,Mingus etc.), with the ocasional Pink Floyd. So for me the possibility to re-create these pieces as close to live sound will be the goal. Also I like to listen in the 85db range, give or take.
Now the main problem with my situation is that I live in a soo small country that there is almost nothing availible to test at home. All the auditions that I have done were in someone elses home (other country), or dealers in Germany when I travel for work.
From what I have managed to hear, ATC has been the speaker brand that had made the biggest impression on me.This was a SCM50A SL studio monitor, for which unfortunately I have no budget, considering I have to buy new (no second hand market, import taxes more then 35-40% plus shipping).
In my price range (5-6000 EUR) I can buy locally (no audition) the following:
1.ATC SCM40 mk2 passive ~5000 EUR
2.ATC SCM20 ASL mk2 ~ 6200 EUR
3.Neumann KH 310 A ~ 3800 EUR
4.Harbeth SHL5 + ~ 4800 EUR
5.Adam S4X-V ~ 6500 EUR
What I can also listen (dealers shop) and "easily" buy are also the following:
1.JBL LSR6332 (or other Pro offering from them) ~ 3000 EUR
2.JBL 4429 ~ price not determined
3.Klipsch La Scala II ~ 6500 EUR (new)
4.Tannoy Turnberry GR or DC8ti
5.Focal 1028Be ~ 6000 EUR
6.Dynaudio C1 Platinum ~ 7000 EUR
7.ME Geithain RL 940 ~ 5000 EUR
8.Or forget everything and buy a nice pair of Stax/Senns 800S headphone rig.
As you can see, I am pretty confused in which way to go, the main issue being not able to listen at home. The only thing what I can do is to take my amp when auditioning, but how much this will be relevant I don' know. Also for some of these combinations I will need a new amp for sure.At the moment I would like to focus on the ATCs and the Neumann, but if the other equipment is more suitable for me, then I would consider it strongly.
So, if it were your place, and you like the music and presentation what I like, in which way you will go? I understand that you can't feel or know how I will like certain something, but still you have much more experience and that is what I am after, basically guidelines.
Few, that was a long post, hope I was understandable
