Speakers minimum 8 Ohms?

I have an old Yamaha AX-300 amp, which sounds lovely incidentally, and on the back it says "Speakers minimum 8 Ohms." Does this mean that if I connect an old pair of Philips speakers, which also sound lovely, incidentally, I risk blowing the amp?

I realise this is a stupid question, but it does seem odd that Yamaha states 8 Ohms as the "minimum."
