Mysteriously disappearing music files

Are they by any chance down the bottom somewhere as 'unknown artist' or whatever, i.e. some sort of tagging failure? I've certainly found Ive had to keep an eye on the very few occasions I've imported stuff from other formats/platforms. The other place to look is the 'various artists' folder as, as iTunes relies on external databases for tagging e.g. Gracenote, there are occasionally errors in the tagging data.

PS I'm assuming you are saying the stuff never made it across from the import procedure, if you are implying it was once there and is now not I've not got a clue, though I have read some comments of issues if the iCloud Match and Music streaming facilities are enabled, but I thought they'd fixed that a couple of software updates ago. I use neither feature so have little to add there.
