Bookshelf speaker upgrade help please

I'm going to have to rethink this one. A pair of Yamaha NS1000Ms arrived here today and sound fantastic with the JVC AX-Z1010TN amp but unfortunately they are far too low in the WAF department (as in too big for our smallish living room)

So, any suggestions for a more compact pair of bookshelf speakers that will be an upgrade on the B&W 601 S2s? I'd prefer accurate and neutral to match the amp, with the 'you are there' realism on good recordings. Budget is up to about £1000.
