do those who master records ever listen thru loudspeakers?

do those who master records ever listen thru loudspeakers?

Just got hold of a CD by an indian lady, Najma, called "Vivid" - she has very interesting vocals but the recording is any thing but vivid in any sense - has lumbering bass lines that can be best called murky & a dull sound which veils the whole recording ( shame ), and this thru my Epos M5i speakers!!, so god know what would sound like thru full range speakers. - system is Audiolab 8200cdq and 8000M amps so not rubbish by any means. I cant believe who ever mastered the cd ever listened to it thru loudspeakers, only headphones? Makes me wonder how recording studios assess quality and if the use of loudspeakers not on the list. I feel sorry for the artists who get done in this way.

Rega DAC filters

Just wanted to share my experience with Rega DAC (non R version, used on USB port) filters. There are 5 of them, differences are subtle and somewhat speaker/system dependent. YMMV.

1) the most extended from top to bottom, the most transparent and neutral. Midrange is a bit recessed for my tastes (very neutral), and can sound a touch bright. Tone overall is a touch brighter. I can easily understand why it is the default/preferred filter.
2) truncated on both top and bottom ends. Treble is rolled off. Midrange is forward and sounds darker. Non aggressive sound, can tame a bright system at the expense of frequency extremes. Sounds a bit lofi comparatively, but with a forward, lusher midrange
3) sounds just odd to me, I do not use
4) slight upper midrange lift and stronger bass
5) somewhat V shaped

Richard 'Battles' Ashcroft - 6 Music interview

Richard 'Battles' Ashcroft - 6 Music interview

Heard Richard Ashcroft on the drive home this evening, what a car crash of an interview - I have never heard anyone who enjoys the sound of his own voice so much - pretentiousness of the scale the guy would have been well at home in the early 70s having his ego stroked whilst authorising another Roger Dean sleeve design. Did somebody say 'battles'?.

Wtfplay

Guys this was developed over the last year by Fryderck and whilst I was skeptical initially I believe he has turned out a gem. This is a customized Linux OS that runs on Ram. It is booted from either CD or USB key.
Minimalist, cost effective and most importantly I think it sounds great. Give it a whirl and see what you think. Plays all resolutions of flac and wav and although DSD files not supported yet there are reports that if works on those files also. It takes a bit of effort to get use to command line but there is a small GUI that is fairly easy to use. Looks like Fryderck has posted it on Diyaudio but if you have any queries on working it will try to help.

'am pleased to announce that wtfplay is now official.

wtfplay is my attempt to create minimalist Linux based, PC music playback
environment. Initially I wrote the music player software, later I built a
dedicated Linux distribution for it. It is called wtfplay-live.

In this project, the top priority is the sound quality rather than a number of
features. Try it and let me know what you think.

The downloads and the documentation can be found at http://ift.tt/1Qh5hgl

The official support thread is on diyaudio:
http://ift.tt/1plHByG ... ystem.html

I will will be answering some queries there as well.

At this point I would like to thank guys on this forum who have been testing this for me. Many thanks for your valuable feedback.

wtfplay is still work in progress and in time new features will be added to it, so stay tuned for updated.

Enjoy.

Does not have the long play option that in my opinion only degraded what is an excellent player.

[FREE] Sony PS-T22 direct drive turntable

Sony PS-T22 direct drive turntable

Semi-auto DD turntable. Been sitting on a shelf for ages, one of those projects I will never get round too. Works, though with a lot of speed fluctuation (I suspect dirty switch contacts or alignment of the head that governs the direct drive speed but haven't looked into the issue). There's also an occasional slight scraping as the platter goes round. Decent condition, though the top cover is scuffed and scratched but could probably be polished up. I also don't have the original rubber mat, though I'll include the felt one that came with it. Free to anyone who wants to get it going. I do have a brand new AT95 cart that I purchased to go with it which is £20. P and P with hermes will be no more than £12 to a mainland UK address. Please PM if interested.

[FS] TARGET SHELVES & TABLES

Two TT1 Target shelves made for shoe-box sized kit, although suitable for full length kit and turntables. It was a limited run and never made their catalogues (probably because it cost more that the standard.

One is in v.good cond., with all 8 spikes and corresponding discs glued to the underside of the wooden shelves.

The other's frame is fine but one shelf has gouges out of the underside, no discs and may be limited to 4 spikes. A combination of 4 corner spikes or rear 2 spikes & 2 corner spikes can be used with a t/t (v. good with LP12 or other suspended T/Ts). There's a spare full width shelf for one of the units at extra cost if required.

The TT3 table is in good all-round cond., as is the much more robust AER5. There are some slight marks on a couple of the shelves, but they're both quite presentable.

I had hoped to transport these (if sold) to Scalford, but that's now hanging in the balance, unfortunately. The items are difficult to post/courier, though I have posted two other shelves at around £20 each.

I'm looking for £50 for the good shelf. £40 for the lesser one; £40 for the 3 tier table and £70 for the 5 tier. Collection from east Norwich or possibly meet/whatever in East Anglia, whereby prices negotiable. Extra pic's and dimensions can be supplied to your email address.

Cheap HiFi Upgrade

Thought some radio fans might be interested in this . I managed to eliminate some faint birdie noises on fm radio by swapping an internet cable near the power supply for a CAT6a ( shielded cable - not CAT6 ) . This was just a few pounds off ebay and removed a significant annoyance .

Michell Gyro SE suddenly stopped working (belt)

Thanks both. Could be grease, but I have cleaned it all just to check. It doesn't matter which of the platter grooves that I start the belt off in, it always pulls itself off (downwards) after a couple of revolutions.

I am also wondering if it might be to do with the fact that the platter doesn't sit quite straight to the chassis, but it never has done and has never caused this problem before.

I am working from home today, so I'll get the old faithful SL1210 out for the rest of the afternoon as I haven't got time to play around too much.

I think I need to pull the Gyro apart and rebuild it anyway. I posted a couple of months ago about static/distortion that was coming through the left speaker when I move the tonearm and that is back with a vengeance as well!

[FS] CTC ("Garrard") 301, SMD Slate Plinth and SME 312 arm

I'm really not sure if I want to follow through on this, but personal circumstances/setup mean I'm thinking I ought to explore selling my beloved TT. I've created this as a FS (for sale) rather than IC (interest considered) as I'm not really sure what IC really means. Obviously if a sale is agreed there will be a commitment on my behalf to follow through!

Anyway, the TT is a gorgeous, mint, Classic Turntable Company (Garrard "copy") 301. A picture here:

The deck is in a slate SMD plinth, and the arm is an SME 312.

I think CTC have renamed the range - but it is this one with the oversize platter (mine has the strobe marked platter as you can see above):

http://ift.tt/1XVe2ja

Retail for this model is £2499.

The history of this particular TT is that it was used for many of the website shots and was CTCs centre piece at a few shows before I bought it. According to Ray (CTC's owner) therefore particular care was taken to get the best possible finish on this one!

The plinth is this one:

http://ift.tt/1XVe2je

Retail is £1699 + lid £200.

The SME 312 has been replaced by SME by the "S". I think the 312 that I have was last retailed at around £1900.

As you can see this is over £6000 in total.

I'd seriously consider £3500 for the deck, plinth and arm. I also have a re-built Troika and a Lyra Kleos I could sell with the deck. FWIW both are fabulous to my ears - but the Lyra wins that particular shoot-out.

This will be pick-up only, and obviously therefore a demo would be part of the sale. If you're after a stunning looking, and stunning sounding deck this is well worth your consideration.

PM or post here as you wish.

Nac72 connecting a Tube Box - advice needed please

Hi all

Just got hold of a Tube Box SE II to experiment with and I need some advice please.

My tech knowledge is limited as you'll see. I use a olive Nac72, Hicap, Nap250, ortofon MM cart. I believe the Nac has the 322 board fitted.

First can somebody who knows what they are talking about check the attached photo and tell me if everything looks present and correct on the NAC and that I´m good to go with the Tube Box without needing any additional Naim boards or whatever? (just a new cable).

http://ift.tt/1pkijRu

Wheres the best place to plug the Tube Box in on the Nac? I imagine its usually the aux or Cd but some people swear by the tuner input.

Just curious, but do I have any line upgrade options for the Nac?

I understand that removing the phono board will slightly improve performance is that right? How do I remove the board?

Finally can anyone recommend a good RCA to Din cable to connect the Tube Box.

Thanks in advance.

Avast there! Antivirus software advice

I know that there are lots of knowledgeable computer people on this site, and I'd be interested in picking your brains. My own computer knowledge goes as far as turning the wretched thing on and off unaided.

I have used Avast for a while, and until yesterday have been happy with it on my Windows 7 Professional-equipped laptop. Yesterday, there arrived a new update from Avast, which I duly downloaded. As is usual, I restarted my computer and got as far as the Windows ripply flag logo - and no further. I looked up answers on the other computer and finally fumbled my way to a setting that let me reset the computer to an earlier time. I did so, settling on the last Windows update (and therefore excluding the Avast update), and all was well.

Then up came the Avast update reminder, and, thinking that all would now be well, I agreed to it - and the same thing happened again. And I had to go through the same rigmarole again.

So, clearly I daren't update Avast on this computer. In which case, it seems to me, I shouldn't keep Avast. But what are the alternatives? I have the possibility of a free change to Windows 10. Does that have an effective inbuilt antivirus program? What would you wise folk recommend? (Nobody please say "get an Apple", because my profession (intellectual property) works entirely on Windows software and that's not an option).

Tidal

Hi all,

I have just started my Tidal 30 day free trial, I was simply quite blown away by the quality of the HiFi version, not actually tried the premium version, so can't compare, but actually very impressed, I have have a NAS, and traditionally rip all my CDs via DB Poweramp and use Asset UPnP to stream everything to my Naim NDX, and the Naim UnitiQute 2s I've got dotted around the house. I also have some high res stuff too.

Now at £16.99 a month for the 6 month prepay it seems expensive, but whilst I don't like the whole paying monthly thing (feels too much like a mortgage, albeit less expensive) I am considering it.

Have you tried it? Would like to hear your thoughts...

Kind regards
Jo

I am putting together a retro quadraphonic system based on a JVC amp. I want to buy 4 identical speakers which can be large stand mounts or smallish floor standers. Main requirement is they need to be cheap as chips and have a reasonable bass response.

Do Dual still make turntables?

dimanche 28 février 2016

It's a bit messy:

In 1993/4, Dual was finally split off into

Dual Phono GmbH, i.e. the Dual line of turntables, which were acquired by the German company Alfred Fehrenbacher GmbH, which has continued to produce them in the Black Forest town of St. Georgen.[3] Dual turntables Made in Germany are manufactured on the same traditional product line. They are easily to identify with the manufacturing code beginning with CS xxx.[4]
Dual DGC GmbH (Germany) sells mostly rebranded consumer electronics made in Far East, including turntables (production code DT xxx). DGC products are exclusively sold in Europe.[5]
For the American market, after the insolvency of Schneider Rundfunkwerke AG in 2001, TCL Holdings, a Chinese company, purchased the Dual assets and brand, and it began marketing its own products under the name. In 2002, Namsung Electronics, a Korean company, bought the rights to use the name in the Americas and began selling lower-priced (but generally well-reviewed) consumer electronics under the Dual marque. The main product lines are home audio, mobile audio, marine audio and GPS receivers.[6]

So some of today's Dual-branded TTs have a link to the original works, but not all.

http://ift.tt/21uRv2j

It also seems that Fehrenbacher builds TTs for other brands, such as the lower-end Thorens models.

Marantz CD-57 focus error fix, anyone?

I have an old CD-57 that displays "disc" whatever I do. There is a Youtube video that shows that putting a 47K resistor across R112 increases the error tolerance and then the player works. Does anyone know if this is OK to try?
And does this mean I should try twiddling the pot that sets the focus on the laser? Or does the resistor stay there as a permanent fix?

P.S. I am not very technical.....

QUAD 405 Lower input sensitivity to 1.5V

Chaps,

I bought this 405 which was overhauled about two years ago and is working wonderfully. All electrolytic and ceramic caps have been replaced with higher quality electrolytic and film capacitors, it was also completely rewired with thicker wires for better current carrying in the power supply and output lines, and with audio type coax cables for audio signals. The op amp ICs were replaced with Burr Brown audio quality op amps ICs but the input sensitivity has been left unchanged.

What cap or resistor do I add, value and where to solder it?

Thanks much in advance.

Couple of Nima questions

Just about to mount my first tonearm, and I'm unsure about a couple of things, hoping a Nima owner can help.

First, should the arm be mounted parallel to the side of the 'table, or offset towards the spindle? The instructions for the protractor I found on line suggest the latter, but it's not mentioned in the instructions for the arm itself.

Second, why does the lead appear to have two ground connectors at the tonearm end?

Thanks.

Paper shredders

Periodically I have vast quantities of paper to securely shred.

I have been through at least two if not three different types and makes. The current one being a Rexel X60 which has the same issues as described in the review on the Amazon web site.

The big load of paper is at financial and calendar year end when we have about piles of paper to shred quickly and safely. The shredder has to be a cross cut machine to help reduce the volume of the shreddings as well as maximise security (remember Argo and the US Embassy in Tehran).

Thanks for any suggestions.

Musicians - learn your scales with this amazing free PDF

http://ift.tt/1phqo9F

Yesterday's jazz class (http://ift.tt/1QcNqHB) was all about playing altered scales and diminished half tone scales over a dominant 7 to make it sound more interesting (e.g. Honeysuckle Rose (boring) and Marmaduke (interesting)).

I resolved that I should take the time to learn these scales in all 12 keys, but I was not looking forward to writing them all out. Google and profound laziness took me to the link above.

Wowser - what an amazing book. No more excuses for not knowing what to play over minor II-Vs, nor how to make endlessly repeating major II-Vs (Honeysuckle rose) much more interesting.

I thought I should share this in case it's of use to any other music nerds.

[FS] Rega Ela MK1 Loudspeakers – Black Ash – Fully Fluted

I’m selling my all original Rega Ela MK1 Loudspeakers, in very good condition and fully working order.

Speakers have some tiny dents, but the overall condition is very nice.

Rega and many Ela owners believe that the Ela is one of the best all round loudspeakers ever produced. It produces an extremely natural sound balanced across a wider frequency range than most other loudspeakers. The Ela also produces a particularly tuneful and natural bass and is especially suitable for listeners who love bass tunes but hate woolly overblown bass produced by many loudspeakers.
The Ela uses a quarter wave transmission line. To improve airflow through the fold in the transmission line, a full radius section is fitted into the base of the Ela cabinet, resulting in smooth, uninterrupted airflow.
Due to its particularly even bass response the Ela is unusually insensitive to room positioning. The speakers can be placed up to 50mm from a rear wall, in corners or away from the walls. The angle of the speaker is not important. Both loudspeakers can be placed at different angles or in different positions.

[FS] Royd Minstrel Loudspeakers in Black Ash

Sumptuous exuberant bass with lively trebles that defy the size of the box. With the classic Royd Audio Minstrel there is no need for a big ugly sub. For most people, without spending big money these are about as good as it gets. The Minstrels have plenty of fans that site Minstrel's as their all time favourite speaker, no wonder they are appreciating in value still. The Minstrels popularity has ensued that Royd Audio have recently began producing an updated version.
If you're getting into, or back into audio, the most important component is the speaker, and let me tell you that tI've used these with a tiny amp with only 30WPC and I was astounded by the lively bass rich sound.
If you are looking for powerful and compact speakers for your living room, then your search ends with the Royd Audio Minstrel stereo speakers. The 5-inch bass/mid unit in these Royd Audio speakers reproduces deep bass and smooth midrange sounds. Furthermore, the 19 mm dome tweeter in the Royd Audio Minstrel speakers generates distortion-free high-frequency sound. Boasting a sensitivity level of 87 dB, these stereo speakers effectively converts power to clear sound without any loss. What’s more, you can listen to a wide range of sounds, as these Royd Audio speakers support the frequency response bandwidth from 33 Hz-20 kHz.

Anyone heard a Tri TRV CD4SE CD player?

samedi 27 février 2016

It is a valve output player that I can get a good price but would like to know how it compares with similarly priced players (£1750 mark). I've read the one review on the net and they are positive about the sound.

I'm interested in owner views or anyone who has heard it and what against as a comparison

Anyone heard a Tri TRV CD4SE CD player?

Simple FM antenna

All my FM tuners, main room, office, garage, have always worked very well with just a piece of thin wire connected ONLY to the central contact of the coaxial socket on the back. However, in the office the stereo is among steel shelves, and I suspect this prevents it getting a clear, clean signal.

My question: if I use a coaxial cable, connecting the outer screen to the outer ring on the socket at the back and the central wire to the central contact, then keep say 1 meter of screen and leave 1/2 a meter of just the central wire free at the end, will this mean that the radio signal is picked up ONLY by the "naked," unscreened 50 cm of wire at the end?

In other words, I would use the screened portion of the cable to get away from the steel shelves, and the last unscreened bit to pick up the signal. Does this make any sense?

JVC amp problem

Hi, Just got JVX AX-3 from Germany, it has a 2 pin plug, so I connected it to mains with an adapter (2 - 3 pin). Didn't connect any sources or speakerss to it, just plugged it in to see if it would power up, well it did, then after about 30 secs it goes off and there's a slight burning smell, oh dear.

So may'be I've done something really dumb here, but there was a switch on back to select between voltages - 110/120/220/240, it was on 220, I guess should have been 240v, would this caused the problem. Looked inside and a couple of glass cased fuses were blown, see pics, hopefully nothing else blown! Ok it was a cheap amp, but still, I wanted it alive, not dead.

Any help appreciated thanks.

Critics, why? Who needs em???

Critics can be insightful and point to new areas of art, as well as products. I buy records and Apple Macs, go to gigs and movies, recommended by critics. I also check out all of these things online before buying them. Given I am spending money, I've learned who to trust.

I interviewed Morley when he was part of Art of Noise. He's a very bright, amusing, bloke and his reviews are often accurate and illuminating. This doesn't mean to say he doesn't go on a bit. If he does, I just stop reading, or turn him off.

Have They Stopped Making Blank Minidiscs Now?

Im near the end of my last large batch of blank discs I bought. Prices seem to have gone through the roof for sealed 10 packs. I buy a mixture of new and used discs

A sealed 10 pack used to be about £12 a couple of years ago. Now its around 3 times that and only the Sony Neige seems available. It looks like TDK and others have shut down completely Tell a lie the TDK 10 packs are available at £32.95. Im not paying that!

I reckon its just the last of the old stock on the market now. That will be me completely on the used market from now on.

How dare they stop supplying cheap discs for a format the hobbyists like Years of life in the format yet. We need a full revival...come on you hipsters

Amp revamp problems :/

I'm having trouble setting the idling current on an Akai AA-1020. I did a simple recap of one over Christmas, with zero problems, but this one is being obstinate.

The idling current is meant to be set for 40mA (with the multimeter replacing fuse F2 and F3 for setting per channel). But I get a reading of 60mA on each channel. Twiddling the 200R trimmer makes no difference to the reading at all.

Nothing over-heating or any obvious nasties, and all the front panel lamps light up as they should, so hoping it's a simple fix.

What's been done:

All electrolytics replaced by Panasonic FM types. Signal coupling caps with a mix of polyster & poly-pros. All values the same except C5 which is 470uF as had that to hand. Could that increase have increased the current beyond adjustment range?

The four trimmers have been replaced by Bourns 3386F cermet types. The originals were larger open types, so had to solder longer legs to the wiper pins to make the Bourns ones fit. All checked for continuity & correct orientation. Wondering if these new pots might be to blame and I’ve chosen the wrong types? Resistances are 200R and 30K which appear to match the circuit diagram. Tempted to solder in the old ones again just to see.

All six PSU diodes have been replaced with OnSemi MBR40250G types as I thought the originals looked knackered originally (before I realised the discolouring was 40+ years worth of cigarette smoke - nice!).

The Amp:

The PSU:

Any help or if I may have made any obvious gaffs please point them out.

Thanks folks.

I bought this recently but have now realised that I rarely use headphones so I am putting it up for sale. It is a terrific unit and comes with box and manual.
Extremely versatile and should work with any headphones, 4 different gain settings, 0db/10db/18db/20db. Can be used as a single source pre amp.
Lots of great reviews on Google. I would like £375 incl post.

CD Player Op-amp question

CD Player Op-amp question

Hi all,
I'm doing a few small mods to a Marantz CD873 which has a TDA1541 DAC and 2x JRC5532DD Op-amps.
I have removed the muting transistors and I wish to connect a capacitor directly to the output of the op-amp then directly to the RCA sockets.
I'm having trouble finding the pinout of these op-amps and also I was wondering are they single or dual?
Any help or advice would be great! Much appreciated.
Regards

Hello
I want to alter the 'prompt' height (for the sake of clarity, not playing height) of my Ittok tonearm. I can see that the pillar of the fluid damped lowering device is secured by a hex bolt. What size hex key is required? Thanks if you are able to let me know.

[WTD] Plinth for Garrard 301

Hi All

I've been mulling this over for a while, so thought I may as well see what is out there.

Looking for an elegant plinth to house my 301/Audionote Arm2 combo, nothing too big and nothing skeletal - a nice looking lump of wood is what i'm after.

Please let me know if you have anything suitable and available?

A very kind wam dealer has offered to help me put it together and I'll probably end up getting another Moldovan one, but hoping that someone has something like a Collinson they may wish to sell?

Cheers

[WTD] Turntable - around £300

Hi All

I've been asked to find a decent turntable for a friend who wants to resurrect his record collection.

Looking for a 'fit and forget' TT, so something easy to set up and maintain. It's likely to be the last one he'll buy, so needs to be in excellent condition.

Just missed out on a 5 month old RP3 over on AOS, something like that would be perfect.

Cheers

Sniff 'n' the Tears?

vendredi 26 février 2016

I was dimly aware of this band when I was in my teens but a frend of mine just sent me a link to "Driver's Seat" (their one hit) and it's *really* good:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blrHHRWKygw

Following the trail of links it appears there's a lot more where that came from:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpA9-AVMlSo

I'm amazed these guys aren't more famous and, well... revered. Did they just fall through the cracks between prog and punk?

Any other fans out there?

That was quick!

One more question if I may.. I forgot to ask:

This was bought second-hand.

It's only the second CD player I've ever had.

If you (and only if you) bump or knock against it while it's playing, it skips.

Is that normal?

Fair enough, it's "old", but I want to describe it accurately and point out anything that might be a fault.

RAF Aircrews who flew from Italy should be awarded the Bomber Command Clasp

A friend of mine recently met Theo Eaves, he is a Second World War RAF veteran who has launched a petition for a special honour which was given to those who completed bombing missions from the UK to also be given to aircrew who were stationed in Africa and Italy.

10,000 signatures needed and currently at close to 6,000.

Please read the article in the Independent and if you agree sign the petition and share.

This a significantly upgraded machine with an improved graphic card, enhanced storage capability and additional memory. It is a standard 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 with two 2.8GHz Xeon 5400 processors total of 8 cores - look at the Mactracker program to see the spec of the machine.
